Blue Water Cascades
The indigo blue of the water, the green of the vegetation, the constant breeze, and the inexhaustible sound of water,
contribute to make this place, 133 kilometers from San Cristobal de Las Casas, one of the most spectacular and
unforgettable of Mexico.
The Agua Azul river descends over its calcareous bed of stairs, forming a series of cascades
and natural pools, held back by calcareous dikes, geologically called "gours". The
highway takes you to a place where there are some modest services. The cascades
found there are not the only ones. The intrepid ones can reach, with the assistance of
local guides, other, more spectacular, since the stairway continues its descent until the
river unites with the Tulija, forming one of the most impressive curtain of water. The
famous blue color, due largely to the calcareous bed, is only perceptible in time of
dryness. During the rainy season, it is still impressive, but now with a larger volume of
water.
Another 34 kilometers from Agua Azul, is the Misolja waterfall, of approximately 30
meters high, in the midst of a rich jungle vegetation of high mahogany, chicozapotes,
canshanes, and palos de agua trees. In the large pool it forms when falling, it is possible
to swim, provided precautions are taken. This place functions as a touristic park and has some services, such as cabins
for lodging.
