La Venta Canyon
One of the prettiest geological formations of Chiapas is this canyon. Its approximate 80 kilometers are done through the
La
Venta river, one of the leading affluents of the Grijalva river, and whose river-bed runs between walls up to 400
meters, pierced by caves that once had burial purposes for the inhabitants of the
region. One of the most important archaeological findings in the last years in
Chiapas, is Tapesco del Diablo, an unexplored cave for centuries that contained
valuable testimonials, now preserved in the Chiapas Regional Museum of Tuxtla
Gutierrez. At present, the major part of the canyon is accessible only to those
who posses special equipment. However, it is possible to arrive by highway to
the place known as El Aguacero (51 kilometers from Tuxtla Gutierrez), and
where a subterranean river, upon reaching the surface, precipitates, forming high
and tenuous aquatic curtains.
