Oxchuc
From San Cristobal de Las Casas, this Tzeltal town, is 48 kilometers, but, in
difference to the previous one, maintains a bit of traditional architecture, and
has two monuments of interest. The first is the church of Santo Tomas,
presiding on the main square. This church has as chapels, buttocks in its pillared
portico, something strange for Chiapas. The second monument is the church of
El Calvario which crowns a hill on the outskirts of town, claiming the sacred
character that the Chiapanecan towns have given to many hills in their
environment. Following the road to Ocosingo some 10 kilometers, nature offers
the cascade of Mesbilja or El Corralito, birthplace of the Jatate river that runs
through a rich vegetation area. Its access at present is limited to the conditions
of the terrain, but it is perfectly visible from the road.
